Have you ever wondered how some people always have enough time to finish their work in time, whereas others are always rushing from task to task, and never seem to finish anything? Is it because they are more intelligent than the others or they have fewer things to do? The answer is "no". They just use their time more effectively, which means they have good time management skills.

“Time management” is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter – not harder – so that you get more work done in less time, even when time is limited and pressures are high.

There are some benefits of managing your time wisely.

First of all, it relieves your stress, and makes you feel more secure. When you have a “to-do” list for example, you can check the things that are done, and see that you are making progress. This is a great way to avoid stress and decrease the pressure on you.

Additionally, good time management helps you create extra time for your daily life. Since you plan your work time efficiently, you finish your tasks earlier and spend the rest of your time on your hobbies or other personal interests.

So, what are effective time management skills? What should we do to plan our time better?

There are several methods that you can apply.

Number 1: Set achievable goals. If your goals are not realistic, you will never be able to finish your tasks on time. Therefore, it is advisable to think deeply before deciding on your aims. You can use the SMART method when setting your goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. Make sure your goals have these features.

Number 2: Prioritize your tasks. You can put your tasks in order considering their importance. The most important or urgent tasks should have the priority and be finished before the other ones.

Number 3: Set a time limit. When you set time constraints or due dates for your tasks, you will be more focused and work more efficiently. Also, be sure that the time limits are achievable and sensible.

Number 4: Do not forget to take a break. Your brain cannot stay concentrated if you work non-stop for a long time. You must refresh yourself by giving a break between your tasks.

Number 5: Organize yourself well. Many people cannot manage their time because they do not know how to organize themselves. You can start with using a physical or digital calendar to write down the deadlines of your projects. Before doing this, consider the first four methods that we have mentioned. Do not waste your time on unnecessary or unimportant tasks. Focus on the important and urgent ones and put them in your calendar first.

There are a lot of ways to improve your time management skills. You should try them and find the best way that fits you.
