Gençlik Pınarı: Sonsuza Kadar Yaşama Fikri

This lecture is about "Fountain of Youth", which is a legendary spring that makes people young again. Listen to the talk. You may turn on the subtitles if you wish. The text of the video is written below. You can follow the text while listening to the audio.

Hi! Before starting today’s lecture, I have a question for you. Would you like to live to 100? Well, this might be a hard question for you to answer. But many people would say “yes”. Some may even want to live “forever”. Living forever or not growing old has been a very popular idea throughout history.

Have you ever heard “the Fountain of Youth”? It is a mythical spring that restores the youth of anyone who drinks or bathes in its waters. Tales of that fountain have been told for thousands of years. Stories of a similar fountain were also popular among the people living in the Caribbean, during the Age of Exploration.

There were rumours that the mythical land of Bimini had water with restorative powers. Due to these legends, explorers and adventurers looked for the Fountain of Youth or some other remedy to aging, generally associated with magic waters. These waters might have been a river, a spring, or any other water source that was said to reverse the aging process and cure sickness when drunk or bathed in.

The legend became particularly prominent in the 16th century when it was attached to Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, first Governor of Puerto Rico. Ponce de León was supposedly searching for the Fountain of Youth when he traveled to Florida in 1513. Legend has it that Ponce de León was told by Native Americans that the Fountain of Youth was in Bimini.

However, he never found the island or the spring which is now called “The Fountain of Youth”. When Ponce de León died eight years later, he was 61 years old. It may seem young, but it was actually a long life for a man of his times and his way of life.

We do not know whether the legends about this magical water are true or not, but we do know that there are several things that you can do to increase your life expectancy. Just follow this simple rule. Treat your body well. Your daily life determines how long you will live, as well as how healthy you will be. First of all, eat healthy food, and do not smoke. Smoking can decrease the number of years that you will live. It might make you sick, affect your skin, and make you look older than you are. Secondly, get enough sleep, and be active in your life. In addition, do not take risks, and choose a nice safe job. Do not put yourself in unnecessary danger by driving fast.

I hope this talk not only provided you with information about the Fountain of Youth, but also helped you learn the tips on the secrets of a healthy and long life. Thank you for listening.
